Checked luggage is the bag that has to survive things you'd never do to it yourself: dropped onto conveyors from chest height, stacked under everyone else's bags in the hold, dragged across rain-soaked tarmac, and occasionally — based on the dents some bags come back with — driven over. The right checked suitcase shrugs all that off for a decade. The wrong one cracks on the second trip.
This is our checked-luggage range: Victorinox Spectra medium and large hard cases, built specifically for the abuse of cargo holds. Authorised Australian stockist. Free shipping Australia-wide, 30-day returns.
The Range
Victorinox Spectra 3.0 Medium — Around 67L of capacity, sized for trips of 7 to 14 nights for most travellers. Pure polycarbonate shell, integrated TSA-approved combination lock, expansion zip adds extra depth for the trip home, dual-spinner wheels.
Victorinox Spectra 3.0 Large — Around 98L of capacity, sized for trips of 2+ weeks, family holidays, or anyone packing formal wear and multiple pairs of shoes. Same construction, same warranty, more room.
Victorinox Spectra Eco — The recycled-material version of the Spectra range. Recycled polycarbonate shell, recycled-PET interior fabric. Identical protection and warranty, smaller environmental footprint.
Yes, It's A Hard Case. No, It's Not Heavy.
The most common worry about hardside checked luggage is weight — and it's largely a hangover from older aluminium cases. Modern polycarbonate is genuinely light. A Spectra 3.0 medium weighs around 3.4kg empty; a Spectra 3.0 large is around 4.5kg empty. That leaves you 18kg+ of packing weight inside the standard Australian international 23kg checked allowance. Compare that to the same capacity in old-style aluminium (around 6–7kg empty) and you'll see why polycarbonate has taken over the premium end of the market.
Polycarbonate vs ABS
Worth understanding because they look identical and the difference matters.
- Polycarbonate — flexes under impact, returns to shape, watertight, durable across temperature swings. The Victorinox Spectra range uses 100% pure polycarbonate.
- ABS plastic — cheaper, lighter, but cracks rather than flexes when dropped or struck. Common in budget suitcases. Looks the same on the shelf, fails sooner under real airline handling.
If a hardside suitcase is suspiciously cheap, it's almost certainly ABS or an ABS-polycarbonate blend. The Spectra range is pure polycarbonate, which is why it carries a multi-year warranty and ABS bags don't.
Medium vs Large — How To Choose
Go medium (around 67L) if:
- Your trip is 7–14 nights
- You travel solo or as a couple with two bags between you
- You're packing mostly soft goods (clothes, toiletries) without bulky shoes or coats
Go large (around 98L) if:
- Your trip is 2+ weeks
- You're packing formal wear, multiple pairs of shoes, or a bulky coat
- You're sharing the bag with a partner or family
- You frequently come home with extra purchases (the expansion zip helps further)
What Good Checked Luggage Has
- 4-wheel spinner wheels — pushable in any direction, easier on shoulders and wrists than 2-wheel bags
- Integrated TSA-approved lock — essential for any travel through the US, useful everywhere else
- Expansion zip — typically adds 2–4cm of depth for the return trip
- Polycarbonate shell (not ABS) — flexes instead of cracking
- Real warranty — Victorinox backs the Spectra range with a multi-year manufacturer warranty against material and manufacturing defects

Frequently Asked Questions
How heavy should checked luggage be?
Empty weight matters because every kilogram of suitcase is a kilogram you can't pack. A modern polycarbonate medium hardside (like Victorinox Spectra 3.0 medium) weighs around 3.4kg empty; a large is around 4.5kg empty. Anything over about 5kg empty for a medium or 6kg for a large is on the heavy side. Older aluminium cases run 6–8kg empty, which is why they've largely been replaced by polycarbonate at the premium end.
Do I need a TSA lock for checked luggage in Australia?
If you fly to or through the US at any point, yes — TSA-approved locks let US security inspect your bag without cutting the lock off. For purely domestic Australian travel they're not legally required, but they're still useful: same combination, no risk if you do connect internationally. Every Victorinox checked suitcase ships with an integrated TSA combination lock.
What size suitcase do I need for two weeks?
For most solo travellers, a medium suitcase at around 67L will cover 2 weeks if you pack with packing cubes and plan one mid-trip laundry stop. If you'd rather not do laundry, or if you're packing formal wear, multiple pairs of shoes, or a bulky coat, step up to a large at around 90–100L. For families or couples sharing one bag, a large is the safer pick.
Polycarbonate vs ABS — what's the difference?
Both are hardside plastics, but they behave very differently under impact. Polycarbonate flexes and returns to shape — the same property that makes it useful for safety glasses and aircraft windows. ABS is cheaper and lighter but tends to crack rather than flex. Most premium hardside luggage (including the Victorinox Spectra range) is 100% polycarbonate. Cheaper hardside bags are often ABS or an ABS-poly blend, which is the main reason they don't last.
How long should a good checked suitcase last?
A premium polycarbonate suitcase from Victorinox should comfortably handle 8–10 years of regular travel, often longer. The shell itself rarely fails — what tends to wear out first are wheels and handles, both of which are replaceable on most Spectra models. Manufacturer warranty cover runs for multiple years against defects. Buying once at the premium end almost always works out cheaper over a decade than replacing a budget bag every two or three trips.
