What's changing on 2 February 2027
Before 2 February 2027 (and on Jetstar Japan flights), Starter fares include two items with a combined weight of 7kg: one main item that fits the overhead locker (no bigger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm) and one small item, like a handbag or slim laptop bag, that goes under the seat.
From 2 February 2027, on Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights:
- All Economy bookings include one underseat bag, max 40 x 30 x 20cm.
- If you want an overhead bag (max 56 x 36 x 23cm) as well, you need Priority Carry-on, bought as an extra or included in some bundles.
- Business Class includes both an underseat and an overhead bag.
- No single bag can weigh more than 10kg.
Already booked? Jetstar's travel-agent FAQ says customers with bookings for travel from 2 February 2027 made before 5 August 2026 are automatically upgraded to Priority Carry-on at no extra cost. Check your booking in Manage Booking to confirm what you have.

Which bags fit the 40 x 30 x 20cm underseat limit
40 x 30 x 20cm is small. It's roughly a compact daypack, a sling or a laptop bag rather than a travel backpack. Measure the bag packed, at its fattest point, including any wheels, feet or handles.
Check the length first: many small travel packs are longer than 40cm. For example, the Nomatic Travel Pack 14L (44 x 24 x 14cm) and the Nomatic Navigator Pack 15L (48 x 30 x 14cm) are too long to count as a Jetstar underseat bag from 2 February 2027.
For a lighter option, slings like the Nomatic Navigator Lite Sling 6L (about 33 x 22 x 8cm) are well within the size.
Key takeaway: if a bag's listed dimensions aren't all within 40 x 30 x 20cm, assume it won't count as your underseat bag.
With Priority Carry-on: overhead bags that fit 56 x 36 x 23cm
The overhead size isn't changing: 56 x 36 x 23cm. Most 55cm cabin cases are designed around it. Check the depth on anything else: the Wenger Ryon Hardside Carry-On, for example, is 54cm tall but 25cm deep, so it is over the 23cm limit.
Remember the new 10kg-per-bag cap applies, so a heavy case packed to the brim may still be a problem.
