A laptop bag has one job the rest of your luggage does not: it has to survive being dropped, sat on and shoved under a seat without passing any of that on to the machine inside. Padding matters more than capacity, and where the padding sits matters most of all.
Sleeve, attaché or backpack
- Sleeve — protection only, meant to go inside another bag. The lightest option, and the one to choose if you already carry a backpack or tote you like.
- Attaché — a slim carry bag with room for a charger, notebook and cables. Reads more formal, and slides over a suitcase handle.
- Laptop backpack — the right answer for a commute of any real distance, because it puts the weight on both shoulders instead of one.
What actually protects a laptop
- A suspended compartment — the sleeve should stop short of the bottom of the bag, so a drop onto the base does not land on the machine.
- Corner reinforcement — corners take the impact first. Rigid clamshell sleeves are built around this.
- A stated size, not a rough one — a 16in machine in a 14in sleeve stresses the zip; a 14in machine in a 16in sleeve slides around.
Measure your laptop's screen diagonal and match it, and check whether your model is one of the thicker Pro variants before ordering to size.
