Start with how many people will sleep in the tent, then think about how you will get to camp. For walking in, a backpacking tent like the Kelty Late Start 1 or Late Start 2 keeps things simple, while the Discovery Trail 3 and the Far Out 3, which comes with a footprint, add room for a third person.

For car camping, more space makes life easier. The Discovery Basecamp 4 has a big D-shaped door, the Wireless 4 gives you two doors, each with a vestibule, and the Rumpus 4 has a huge vestibule that fits chairs and bikes, or gives you somewhere dry to sit.

Most Kelty tents here use Quick Corners, which make pitching faster, and many come with pre-attached guylines. For day trips and beach days, the Cabana shade tent gives shade and privacy. The Backroads Shelter hooks onto a car, 4WD or van.
