Tote Bags

A tote is the bag you carry when you want one hand free and nothing digging into a shoulder. Open or lightly closed at the top, wide enough to drop things into without unpacking, and smart enough to take into a meeting. The travel versions here add the two things ordinary totes lack — a trolley sleeve, and a closure.

What separates a travel tote

• A trolley pass-through — slides over a suitcase handle so you are wheeling, not carrying, through the terminal.
• A real closure — an open tote is fine in an office and a liability in an airport. Look for a zip or a secured top.
• A flat base — so it stands up when you put it down, instead of tipping and emptying itself.
• A padded sleeve if a laptop is going in. Totes rarely have one built in.

Sizing

Under 15 L is a day tote for a laptop and lunch. Above 20 L it becomes a weekender — enough for an overnight bag, and usually still within a personal-item allowance.
